Romanian Motorways Review Q1 2017

Provided below is a review of relevant news for each Romanian motorway project published in the past three months:

I. A1 MOTORWAY (Bucharest - Nadlac)

Bucharest - Pitesti: The entire length of the section is open to traffic.

Pitesti - Sibiu: Feasability study work plan has been resumed, after contract was suspended earlier in 2016. According to official statements the opening date of the motorway is in 2021, which is considered optimistic. Sibiu ringroad is open to traffic (17.2km).

Sibiu - Orastie and Orastie - Deva are both open to traffic.

Deva - Lugoj: First stretch of motorway opened in 2017 was a partial opening on segment 2 of Deva - Lugoj (15km). Section 1 is open, while work progresses on sections 2 (remaining part), 3 and 4. Estimated opening dates for the remaining sections should be by the end of the year 2017, however work may continue beyond the end of 2017.

Lugoj - Timisoara, Timisoara - Arad and Arad - Nadlac are all open to traffic.

II. A3 MOTORWAY (Bucharest - Bors)

Bucharest - Ploiesti: 55.5km of this section are open to traffic. Work progresses on the last 3.3km out of the remaining 6.5km on this section. Estimated opening date should be sometime in 2017 but status is unclear.

Ploiesti - Brasov: Tender for a short section of 6km between Rasnov and Cristian could be finalized in the near future, with work starting this year. There are no news so far pertaining this section and no work is being done in this section.

Brasov - Targu Mures: he are no sections open or under construction. This section has been eliminated from the official plans. The access to Transylvania is replaced by the motorway A10 (Sebes - Turda) which is currently under construction.

Targu Mures - Gilau: 52km of this section are opened to traffic, while the remaining 56.5 km are under a signed contract (except segment 1 for which a second tender process is close to completion). According to official statements the estimated opening date is at the end of 2017, which is also considered optimistic. Work preparations are progressing slowly.

Gilau - Bors: Work continues on the section of Gilau - Nadasel, the estimated opening date is in 2017 (optimistic). A tender is in progress for the access bridge to Gilau - Nadasel. The contract for Nadasel - Mihaiesti has been signed, with work expected to start in the near future.

III. A10 MOTORWAY (Sebes - Turda)

Work is in progress on all four segments, due to various procedures it has been slowed down. The completion for two segments has been estimated to be in 2017 while completion for the other two segments has been estimated to be in 2018.

IV. OTHER PROJECTS

There is only one 11km segment opened on Motorway A6 (Lugoj - Calafat), this segment has been opened 2013. This motorway will not be extended.

There is only one 3.5 km segment opened on Motorway A11 (Arad - Oradea) which connects Motorway A1 and DN7.

There is renewed hope in regards to the the motorway connecting Targu Mures and Iasi. The update of the feasability study as well as the commencing of work is estimated to take place before 2020. Recent anouncements indicated that a motorway linking Craiova - Pitesti is being explored. There is also and increased interest from both Romania and Serbia for a motorway connecting Timisoara and Belgrade.

V. COMPLETED MOTORWAYS

Motorways A2: Bucharest - Constanta and A4: Constanta Ringroad are completed with entire length open to traffic.
